What is Endodontics?
Endodontics is part of restorative dentistry, which aims to restore teeth to their normal form, function and appearance.
Endodontics deals with the health of the tooth pulp and tissues surrounding the root of the tooth. The tooth pulp contains nerves and blood vessels and, like any other bodily tissue, these can become diseased or injured and unable to repair themselves.
Endodontic treatments include root canal treatment (root filling) and root end surgery.
This treatment involves removing damaged or dead nerves and blood vessels in the root of the tooth that have become infected due to decay or trauma. The space left is then filled with a material that seals the tooth and keeps it functioning as before. Endodontic therapy saves the tooth and prevents
further infection and pain.
Particular conditions that are treated within endodontics include the treatment of nerve damage, abscesses, cysts of dental origin and trauma.
An endodontist is a dental surgeon who has completed postgraduate training dedicated to the endodontic specialty.
